Florence Oliver Gorman, 87, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 11, 2016, at home surrounded by loved ones. She was born May 30, 1929, in New York, one of four children to Ernest W. and Signe (Palm) Oliver. Florence graduated from The University of Connecticut (UCONN) in 1953, with a bachelor’s degree in Food and Nutrition. She earned experience at The Springfield Hospital Medical Center, St. Francis Hospital in Hartford, Wesson Memorial Hospital in Springfield, and Lawrence Memorial Hospital in New London. She also took special courses at the University of Massachusetts. She married James Grennen Gorman on January 31, 1953, whom, she had met working in the cafeteria at UCONN in 1950. She was the Chief Clinical Dietitian at Noble Hospital for 16 years, all while raising six children. Florence was an active member of the Heart Fund and the American Dietetic Association. She was highly respected and appreciated throughout her community and workforce. She received many letters of appreciation from those whom she actively helped to gain, and maintain, a healthy lifestyle. Florence was a kind-hearted woman, who was always filled with joy and patience. She had the most beautiful smile that could light up any room she walked into. She was an active tennis player, and she enjoyed sailing around the Long Island Sound in her sailboat. Florence had a wonderful sense of humor. She loved to sing, dance, and make up songs to entertain her family and friends. She is survived by her husband of 63 years, James Grennen Gorman, and her six children, James Joseph Gorman and his wife, Jennifer, of Norwalk, C.T., Pamela McCorkindale and her husband, Richard, of Westfield, M.A., Raymond Gorman, of Meredith, N.H., Jeanne Manimaren, of Groton, C.T., Paul Gorman, of Westfield, M.A., Thomas Gorman, of Westfield, M.A. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, Joseph, Lindsey, Marissa, Jennifer, Daniel James, Andrea, Daniel Charles; and two great-grandchildren, Banya, and Stryder. She is predeceased by her three brothers, William, Herbert, and Edward Oliver. Her funeral will be held on Thursday August 25th at 8:30AM from the Firtion Adams FS, 76 Broad St. Westfield, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9:30AM in St. Peter’s Church, State St. Westfield. Burial will follow in the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main St. Agawam. Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, August 24th from 4-7PM in the funeral home.
