Craig Vandermyn Obituary

With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Craig A. Vandermyn, a loving father, husband and brother.  Craig was a very active man of many talents, and he passed away surrounded by those who loved him the most.  He will forever be remembered for his great sense of humor and his uncanny ability to fix everything and anything no matter how challenging.  His greatest joy was hockey and his Saturday afternoon skate that he ran for the last 40 years.

Craig, 72, was born in Newton, Ma. to the late Violet E. Vandermyn (Lockhart) and Gerard Vandermyn, in 1952 and spent most of his life in the Sixteen Acres and Hungry Hill sections of Springfield, MA.  He leaves behind his brother Stephan (Betty) Vandermyn, his sister Anne Vandermyn, his brother David (Connie) Vandermyn, his brother-in-law Tommy Schmidt, his grandchildren Samantha, Kaylie, Finn and Jayce, and many nieces and nephews.  He is predeceased by his sister Linda Vandermyn-Schmidt and his daughter Shauna Vandermyn.

Craig married his wife Nancy in 2000 to whom he was deeply devoted and together they built their family with his 3 children, Shauna, Allyson and Melissa, and her two children, Matt and Amanda.  They shared their love of sports, mainly hockey, despite him being a dedicated Montreal Canadiens fan and she a Boston Bruins fan.  They loved visiting Cape Cod and going to the beach, biking, taking motorcycle rides and going on cruises together.  They built a wonderful life of adventure when Nancy could get him away from yardwork and “things to do” around the house.

Craig was a skilled machinist who furthered his career by also becoming a programmer.  He worked at Belt Technologies for the last 18 years and was highly respected by his coworkers.  He loved his trade, which was evident by the fact that he was still working at age 72, and on the weekends, he would use his skills to build, mow, cut, and fix everything at home and at his daughters’ houses.  He was the rock of his family, always the first call and text when something was not working or needed to be built or installed.  He was the most wicked-on-it handyman and will always be remembered as the King of the Irish Goodbye.

A wake will be held on Friday, May 2nd, from 4p to 7p at the Firtion-Adams Funeral Home in Westfield, Ma, with a service to be held at 6:30p.  In lieu of flowers, donations will be accepted at both the Wounded Warriors Project and St. Jude’s Hospital. www.firtionadams.com
