Dr. Karl K. Leiker

Dr. Karl K. "Doc" Leiker, a beloved educator, meteorologist, and supporter of athletics, passed away on December 5, 2024, at the age of 87. Born on October 12, 1937, to Nick and Corona Leiker, Karl grew up with a passion for learning and sports that would shape his remarkable life.

A college athlete himself, Karl played football at Fort Hays State University in Kansas, attending on the GI Bill and a partial football scholarship. He went on to earn a master's degree at the University of Missouri and completed his doctoral work at Penn State University in the early 1970s. His teaching career brought him to Westfield State University in 1976, where he became a cherished member of the community.

Doc's contributions to Westfield State athletics were legendary. He began as an announcer for the track and field program, braving cold New England weather with his trusty space heater. He later served as an assistant football coach during the program's early varsity years and eventually joined the "chain gang," a sideline crew known for its camaraderie and gourmet halftime spreads. Doc's meteorological expertise also proved invaluable, helping to keep athletic events on schedule with his accurate forecasts-though he was quick to laugh about the rare missed prediction.

Beyond athletics, Doc was a dedicated faculty member in the geography department, where his classes on severe weather were student favorites. He was known for his engaging teaching style and for fostering connections with student-athletes, often discussing their games and achievements in class. During summers, he returned to the Midwest to chase storms, bringing his signature humor and insight to every adventure.

Dr. Karl K. Leiker is survived by his nephews, Chris Leiker and Greg Leiker, along with countless colleagues, students, and friends who were touched by his wisdom and wit. Services will be held on Wednesday from 4-6 PM in Firtion-Adams Funeral Service, 76 Broad Street, Westfield followed by a funeral
