Edward Barako Obituary

Edward Barako passed away on Sunday, March 19, 2023. During his final weeks he was surrounded by those who loved him. Eddie was born in Jersey City, New Jersey to the late Joseph and Emelia Barako. He graduated from Ferris High School in Jersey City, New Jersey. Edward was married to Janice Pfeiiffer in 1946 and had three children, Dr. Elaine Cuphone, Joseph Barako and Lynn Barszcz. Edward moved with his family to Westfield Massachusetts in 1967, and has resided in Feeding Hills since 1973. Eddie worked many years in his father’s grocery store and then became a very successful salesman. He ended his career as an employee of Noble Hospital in 1988. After retirement, he became active in the Polish American Club in Agawam, serving for many years as the secretary. He was well-known for his involvement in their Bingo program. Ed enjoyed sports. He played softball, golf, and table tennis. For many years he was an umpire for the Westfield Little League. Always interested in a game of chance, he played the same number in the daily lottery for over thirty years. A lover of the card game, Jack’s or Better, he frequented the MGM casino. He said that he never expected to win, just to be entertained. Edward was married for 73 years having lost his wife Janice in 2019. He is survived by his son, Joseph and his wife Janet, and by his daughter Lynn Barszcz. His oldest daughter, Dr. Elaine Cuphone, passed in 2012. He is also survived by his five grandchildren and his six great-grandchildren. The family would like to thank the neighbors, Robert and Cis Nowacki, and Carol Marcoux for all their wonderful love and friendship with dad throughout the years. Calling hours will be held at Firtion-Adams Funeral Home, 76, Broad Street Westfield on April 8th from 1-2:30 pm with a celebration of life to follow at 2:30 pm. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Jay and Kyle Scherpa, two of his great-grandchildren always amazed him with their musical talents. He attended many of their concerts and stated that he would prefer when he died to have a gift in his memory given to promote music for children. In keeping with his wishes, in lieu of flowers, Edward would prefer to have others donate in his memory to the Doering School Band at The Doering School 68 Main Street Agawam MA 01001, to the attention of Mr. Zachary Scherpa.
