Ernest L. Simmons of Westfield, Massachusetts, died on January 17, 2021, age 97 years, of complications due to COVID-19 at Baystate Medical Center, Springfield. He was born in Westfield, son of the late Edward and Emilie Samplatsky.
He was a faithful and committed member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Westfield, where he was baptized, confirmed, and served on the Building Committee, and as Treasurer and Sunday School Superintendent for many decades.
Ernest proudly served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the South Pacific Fleet.
He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from American International College in Springfield.
After his graduation, he worked as a Certified Public Accountant and a Resident Partner with the accounting firm KPMG in Springfield. Upon his retirement, he continued to serve as a CPA consultant for the American International College.
Ernest was survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Elizabeth, who then passed away on February 16, 2021. He is survived by daughter Anne (R. Wayne) Grauel and two grandsons, R. John and Aaron, all of Maryland, his sister Wilma Gillan, sister-in-law Helen Brusco, and four nieces. He was predeceased by two nephews.
A private graveside committal service will be held at Pine Hill Cemetery in the fall. Firtion-Adams Funeral Service is assisting the family.
