Fontaine A. Velis, 84, known to her family and friends as Becky, passed away peacefully at her home on June 24, 2025. Born on January 18, 1940, she was the daughter of the late Athanasios and Helen Velis. Fontaine is survived by her brother, The Honorable Peter Velis, his wife Suzanne, and their children, Stephanie Cullen (and husband Dillon), and Nicholas Velis; her brother James, his wife Susan, and their children, Jennifer Covington, Senator John Velis (and wife Emily), and Adam Velis (and wife Sarah); and her beloved great nephews, Tyler Covington, Hudson Covington, Carson Velis, Noah Velis, and Mason Cullen. Having grown up in Westfield, Fontaine graduated from Westfield High School, and then went on to attend Vermont College in Montpelier where she earned a degree in Medical Laboratory Technology. While living in Boston, Fontaine worked in the lab at New England Deaconess Hospital for many years before returning home to Westfield to work at Mercy Medical Center’s laboratory in Springfield. Fontaine was very proud of the years she served on Westfield’s Zoning Board of Appeals. Following that, as her final job, she worked for the Westfield Police Department as a school crossing guard where she enjoyed meeting the parents and children she assisted at Highland Elementary School. In that position, she was commended for saving a child from being struck by a speeding car. Fontaine’s greatest pleasure in life was spending time with her family, going out to dinner or the movies, or just talking around her kitchen table. A private funeral is planned for the future.
