Obituary

Our sweet, dear mother Gloria Shirley Dibble McMahon passed peacefully into eternal rest on August 31, 2021. The daughter of Susie and Ernest Dibble, Gloria was a New Year’s Baby, born in Westfield on January 1, 1929. She graduated from Westfield High School in 1946 and worked as a telephone operator before marrying the love of her life John “Jack” McMahon. Gloria and Jack spent the early years of their 49-year marriage raising five children: Michael (Mary Jane) McMahon, Gary (Michele) McMahon, Sally (Henry) Bannish, Maureen McMahon & Jo Ann McMahon. She was the tender, warm grandmother of Patrick (Katy), Brendan & Tara McMahon, Stephan (Melissa), Shawn & Scott McMahon and Marisa Bannish. Gloria was also the proud great-grandmother of Isabela and Patrick McMahon, Noah Billings and Sean McMahon. The loved ones who passed before her were her husband Jack, her daughter Maureen and her grandchildren Marisa and Shawn. Gloria enjoyed a full life of family, work and fun. After many satisfying years as a homemaker, she worked in banking becoming Assistant Treasurer of the Westfield Co-operative Bank. Then followed a retirement full of activities. She enjoyed swimming in the “warm” pool at the “Y” and the camaraderie of the “Knit Wits” group knitting hats for members of the U.S. Armed Services. Gloria was a Red Cross volunteer, an enthusiastic member of the Whip City Traveler’s Group and a member of the Sons of Erin Women’s Auxiliary. For many years she was Secretary of the Rosewood Condo Association in Southwick where she had many friends. Her most cherished moments were any that she spent with her beloved children and grandchildren. She loved being near the ocean and being with family at the Cape. Gloria loved to laugh and had a sweet smile and kind word for everyone she met. The lives of all who knew and loved her were made forever richer by her presence in them. Calling hours will be held at Firtion Adams Funeral Home in Westfield on Saturday, September 4, from 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Facemasks are requested. A private family service and burial will follow. A kind and generous soul, Gloria would be delighted if friends would “pay it forward” to the WoundedWarriorProject.org or to the charity of their choice.
