Joseph James Kearns left us on January 23, 2026 after a life devoted to teaching and mentoring students and sustained political and civil engagement. He grew up in Edgewater NJ, graduated from Fairfield University and later attended state colleges and UMass. A committed believer in nonviolent social justice, he opposed the Vietnam War and lived his convictions through draft resistance, civic involvement and compassionate action throughout his life. Joseph dedicated his professional career to education, serving in both public and residential schools, finally working for several decades at Westfield Vocational High School where he was deeply committed to supporting, advocating for and strengthening the lives of students. He had a strong passion for construction and local governance, interests that reflected his dedication to building both physical structures and resilient communities: a member of the Hampshire County Commission, Middlefield Select Board and Finance Committee, Moderator of the Town Meeting and other positions in innumerable organizations. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mary Louise Acker Kearns; his son, James Kalman Kearns, PhD; his brothers John and Stephen; and his sister, Meri. Visiting hour from 2-3PM with a funeral service from 3- 4 PM Saturday, January 31 will be hosted by Firtion Adams, 76 Broad St Westfield, MA 01085. Www.firtionadams.com
