Phyllis Ann (Smith) Lindberg passed away on November 2, 2023. She was born in Holyoke on February 9, 1926, the only child of Stanley H. Smith and Ethel (Gutzman) Smith. Phyllis was predeceased by her parents and her husband, Alex W. Lindberg, the love of each other’s lives. They met and graduated from Metcalf Jr. High School and Holyoke High School in 1943. Phyllis’ story is incomplete without including Alex. They married in 1950 and lived the first 7 years in the Chestnut Hill section of Brookline. Alex served in the U.S. Marine Corps as a radioman and after his discharge from World War II from the San Diego Naval Hospital in 1945, he graduated from the Saunders School of Radio Engineering and Radio School, Inc., both in Boston. After 7 years he made a career change to accept a position with the Strathmore Division of International Paper in Westfield and at retirement was the Executive Host. Alex and Phyllis traveled extensively from the time they married and on retirement spent 17, 6 month winters in Fountain Hills, AZ, where they made new friends. They both retired in 1988, he from International Paper and I from BayBank. They were 35 year members of Shaker Farms Country Club in Westfield, where Alex had a hole-in-one and another at Longmeadow Country Club. They were members of the First Congregational Church in Westfield. They were on all Holyoke School Reunion committees and members of Class of 1943 Circle of Friends monthly luncheon group. He and Phyllis had 62 wonderful years together when Alex passed away suddenly on Veterans’ Day, November 11, 2012. She leaves her cousin Carolyn and Paul Henneman of S. Hadley, cousin Beverly Ritchea of Athol, MA, Karen Miller of Seal Beach, California, Susan Shipman of Arroyo, California, brother-in-law Perry of Prospect, TN, Alex’s close cousins, Peter and Judith Burhans of Barkhamstead, CT, who were always there for her and Judy was like a sister. Also, Marie Vieau, neighbor and close friend; Tracy and Angelo Mazza of West Springfield; Beverly Gamble of Westfield; Helen Blaha of Westfield and several nieces and nephews in CT. She was predeceased by Alex’s brother Andrew and Alex’s sister Marilyn Coughlin. Her funeral will be held on Friday, November 10, at 11AM in the Firtion Adams Funeral Service, 76 Broad St. Westfield, MA 01085 followed by burial in Pine Hill Cemetery, Western Ave. Westfield, MA. Visiting hours will precede the service from 10-11AM in the funeral home.
