Sarah Terry Obituary

Sarah (Sally) Meiklejohn Terry passed away September 16th after fighting her third battle with breast cancer. A native of Newton, Massachusetts, Sally graduated with a BA from Cornell University (Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi). She went on to receive her M.A. and a Ph.D. from Harvard University in Soviet Studies and Political Science.  Sally was a Professor at Tufts University beginning in the fall of 1975 until her retirement on December 31, 2002.  Professor Terry was an active member of the Association for Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies, serving on its Board of Directors from 1984-1986 and again from 2000-2002.  She was the author of Poland’s Place in Europe: General Sikorski and the Origin of the Oder-Neisse Line, 1939-1943, (Princeton University Press, 1983) which won the American Historical Association’s George Louis Beer Prize in Modern European International History.  She edited and contributed to Soviet Policy in Eastern Europe (Yale University Press, 1984) and co-edited and contributed to The Soviet Empire Reconsidered: Essays in Honor of Adam B. Ulam (Westview Press, 1994).  In 2021 Sally moved from Belmont, MA to Longmeadow, MA to be closer to her brother and his family.  She is survived by her brother, John Meiklejohn, her sister-in-law Sarah Meiklejohn and their two children, her ex-husband, Robert C. Terry, as well as her nephews, James and Jonathan Tubman and their families.  Donations in her honor may be made to her mother’s memorial scholarship fund, the E.H.
